Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a shareholding in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold one-third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team stays unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement signifies a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group bought its share for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and has grossed over $630m (£458 million) at the box office.

It is Pitt's most successful film and the highest-earning sports movie to date.

Present Performance

Mercedes are second in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
