The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
