The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
