Minister Confirms Ministry of Defence Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Instructed to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid discussing classified matters in any vehicles.

Safety Advice for MoD Staff

In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese cars.

The minister stated that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Defence Context

This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and bring disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

This broader defence situation underscores the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of government operations, including vehicle use to communication practices.
