RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
