EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
